• This story is heartbreaking. The legal system, and those of us in healthcare, need to do a much better job treating those with anxiety, depression, and the resulting substance abuse. This story is an illustration of our failure as a society of helping those in need. Tactics need to be focus on the underlying cause and treatment of the issues, rather than being purely punitive. And while I’m truly glad the AA approach works for some people, it is not a one size fits all as it is often touted. Many people with substance abuse issues have underlying mental health issues that require professional help from a counselor and physician, not a series of unsupervised meetings with a group of strangers. Not to mention a physician with a substance abuse problem really needs the confidentiality of a private counselor if they are to truly open up and get to the root of their issues.
