Survey: 55% of Physicians Wouldn't Recommend Medicine As A Career To Their Children

Three hundred and fifty physicians from across the United States were asked to share their personal feelings on the current state of medicine in an online national survey conducted by the National College of Physicians on January 15th, 2014. Here are the results:

Question 1:

How would you judge the current environment for practicing medicine in the United States today?
18% (63 physicians) - Excellent
17% (59 physicians) - Good
29% (102 physicians) - Fair
26% ( 91 physicians) - Poor
10% ( 35 physicians) - Not sure

Question 2:

Is health care on the right or wrong direction in this country?
57% (199 physicians) - The wrong direction
22% ( 77 physicians) - The right direction
21% ( 74 physicians) - Not sure

Question 3:

To what extent will Obamacare affect the way you practice medicine?
64% (224 physicians) - Very much
12% (43 physicians) - Very little
9% (31 physicians) - Not at all
15% (52 physicians) - Not sure

Question 4:

Are you planning to cut back on patients seen, switch to part time, switch to concierge medicine or retire within the next four years?
58% (203 physicians) - Yes
28% (98 physicians) - No
14% (49 physicians) - Not sure

Question 5:

Do you believe that Obamacare is likely to decrease health care quality and increase costs?
62% (217 physicians) - Yes
33% (115 physicians) - No
5% (18 physicians) - Not sure

Question 6:

Would you recommend medicine as a career to your children or other young people?
32% (112 physicians) - Yes
55% (193 physicians) - No
13% (45 physicians) - Not sure
