As a “thought leader” in gastroenterology, Dr. Brian K. Dieckgraefe has received some of the highest speaker fees paid by drug makers to St. Louis area physicians in recent years. Dieckgraefe — a physician scientist affiliated with Washington University — earned $150,500 in speaking fees from Pfizer Inc. in 2011 and $143,500 in speaking fees from Pfizer in 2010. He also received more than $15,000 from the drug maker for travel and meals in those two years.

Doctors Think Emergency Room Visits Are Going To Explode Under Obamacare
One of the major selling points of the Affordable Care Act was its theoretical potential to reduce costly emergency room visits, given the law's access to coverage. But a new survey shows that so far under the healthcare law, more people are going to the emergency room. The survey found that since Jan. 1 — the day coverage went into effect for millions of Americans — 46% of emergency physicians have experienced jumps in patients. Half that percentage reported a decrease, and 27% of physicians said the influx has stayed about the same.
